44 MEPs sign a letter asking that the European Court of Justice ruling be applied to make Oriol Junqueras a full MEP

The signatories call for the immunity of the now imprisoned Republican President to be protected and for independence of European institutions

44 MEPs from various political groups sent a letter on Wednesday to both the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli and to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urging them to take all the necessary measures to comply with the ECJ ruling for Oriol Junqueras to take his seat as an MEP.

The signatories of the letter specifically ask Mr Sassoli "to defend the institution by protecting Mr. Junqueras' immunity as an MEP, rejecting the announcement of the termination of his term and verifying his credentials when it is voted." "Only the European Parliament, if it so deems, can lift the immunity of one of its members," the letter recalls.

In the text, the MEPs also ask the Spanish government "to enforce the ECJ's ruling by all means to make it possible for Oriol Junqueras to be released and to protect his civil and political rights as an elected European representative".

The signatories of the letter are: Scott Ainslie (Greens/ EFA), François Alfonsi (Greens/ EFA), Christian Allard (Greens/ EFA), Martina Anderson (GUE- NGL), Margrete Auken (Greens/ EFA), Pernando Barrena (GUE- NGL), Izaskun Bilbao (Renew Europe), Benoît Biteau (Greens/ EFA), Milan Brglez (S&D), Damien Careme (Greens/ EFA), Matt Carthy (GUE- NGL), Ellie Chowns (Greens/ EFA), Toni Comin (NI), David Cormand (Greens/ EFA), Clare Daly (GUE- NGL), Petra De Sutter (Greens/ EFA), Gwendoline Delbos- Corfield (Greens/ EFA), Karima Delli (Greens/ EFA), Bas Eickhout (Greens/ EFA), Jill Evans (Greens/ EFA), Tanja Fajon (S&D), Klemen Groselj (Renew Europe), José Gusmao (GUE- NGL), Heidi Hautala (Greens/ EFA), Yannick Jadot (Greens/ EFA), Stasys Jakeliunas (Greens/ EFA), Irena Joveva (Renew), Katerina Konecna (GUE- NGL), Erik Marquardt (Greens/ EFA), Marisa Matias (GUE- NGL), Tilly Metz (Greens/ EFA), Kira Marie Peter- Hansen (Greens/ EFA), Alexandra Louise Phillips (Greens/ EFA), Carles Puigdemont (NI), Michèle Rivasi (Greens/ EFA), Caroline Roose (Greens/ EFA), Alfred Sant (S&D), Mounir Satouri (Greens/ EFA), Tineke Strik (Greens/ EFA), Marie Toussaint (Greens/ EFA), Miguel Urban (GUE- NGL), Kim van Sparrentak (Greens/ EFA), Mick Wallace (GUE- NGL), and Salima Yenbou (Greens/ EFA).
