Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Generalitat of Catalonia

  • Graduate in Political and Administrative Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). She also did a postgraduate course in General Business Management at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC).
  • Technical coordinator of the Fundació del Món Rural (Rural World Foundation). She was in the management of Provedella (Centre de Promoció de la Carn de Vedella de Catalunya) (Promotion Center of Calf Meat in Catalonia). She has also worked for the trade union Unió de Pagesos (Farmers Union) from 1997 to 2006 with different tasks, revitalizing the trade union activity in the Barcelona region, as head of the organization service, internal communication and training of the trade union technical team and formation of trade union activists and was in charge of the technical and organizational coordination of the Unió de Pagesos (Farmers Union) in the 1st Congress of the Rural World of Catalonia.

Author and coordinator of several publications with other authors. Among others, Atles de la nova ruralitat (Atlas of the new rurality) (2009) or Cooperativisme agrari a Catalunya (Agrarian cooperative movement in Catalonia) (2008).

From 2016 to 2017 she was the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Catalonia. She was relieved of her position by the Spanish government with the implementation of the article 155 and she was forced to go into exile to Belgium. From 2018 to 2021, she was also Delegate of the Government of Catalonia to the European Union. She was elected member of the Catalan Parliament in 2021. Since October 2022, Meritxell is Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
