Esquerra has introduced a motion during the plenary session to put an end to the inequalities for staff working at old people’s homes, with youths, or with people at social risk, among others
The Catalan Parliament has endorsed a proposal by Esquerra Republicana to match working conditions and wages of workers in the social sector with those of public workers in other areas, such as health or education. The motion, which aims to combat job insecurity and to set a minimum wage for staff in this sector, received the support of Esquerra, centre-right Junts, and left-wing Comuns and CUP, while socialist PSC, conservative PP, and far-right VOX and Aliança Catalana voted against.
In the draft approved, Esquerra denounces wage inequality and lack of professional recognition endured by the social sector. “It is time to say enough to the precariousness that affects thousands of workers committed to caring for the most vulnerable people in our society,” said Esquerra member of parliament and spokesperson for social rights, Najat Driouech.
Which is why they make the need to strengthen the public social services system in Catalonia explicit, including areas such as the elderly, disabilities, mental health, child care, foster care and adoption, drug addiction or care for victims of gender violence, among many others.
Esquerra Republicana thus applauds the determination of Parliament to continue with the changes begun during the previous legislature and to work to strengthen and improve the Catalan social services system.
