Demonstrators in La Paz

Esquerra Republicana supports resolution of the conflict in Bolivia through dialogue and calls on all political actors to exercise their responsibility to preserve peace, citizens’ rights and maintain democracy.

We have observed with concern the interference of the armed forces in the country's political processes, forcing President Evo Morales to resign and go into exile in Mexico. We have identified evidence of a coup d'etat, prepared and orchestrated between the political opposition and intrusive third countries and organizations. The current situation can only be resolved through dialogue resulting in clean, imminent elections that will allow political parties to stand with equal opportunities.

We believe that preserving the plurinational nature of the country and the rights of native peoples is a priority. Likewise, we believe the de-escalation of the conflict with the withdrawal of the army and the protection of human rights is essential. According to information from the Institute of Forensic Investigations (IDIF), up to 10 people have lost their lives in gunfire since the beginning of the protests. However, human rights organizations fear this figure could be much higher.

Finally, we support the United Nations’ call for the establishment of a committee of experts to guarantee clean elections, as well as the call for the parties to comply with international law, especially concerning human rights.
