Diana Riba champions a democratic response to the rise of the far right at the EFA Assembly in Gandia

Once again this year, Esquerra Republicana has attended the gathering of parties defending their right to self-determination as stateless nations

MEP and Deputy Leader Diana Riba, Secretary for International Relations Adrià Guevara, and European Free Alliance Secretary General Oriol Cases headed the delegation representing Esquerra Republicana at the EFA Annual General Assembly, held at the weekend in Gandia (Catalan Countries).

Under the title of “United for Peace”, the gathering brought together representatives of some forty parties from all over Europe, defending the rights of peoples and their struggle for self-determination. At the Assembly, Esquerra Republicana defended two initiatives: one to ensure that free trade agreements are fairer, and another to promote a more cohesive and efficient railway network within the European Union. A clear majority endorsed both proposals.

Beyond the context of the Assembly agenda, Diana Riba took part in a major event held in the centre of Gandia. She was accompanied by the leaders of Valencian party Compromís, Joan Baldoví and Vicent Marzà, as well as representatives from Basque EH Bildu, Galician BNG, Wales’ Plaid Cymru, and Ireland’s Sinn Féin. Ms Riba defended the “need to respond to the current context of increasing militarization and the growth of the far right through greater democracy, greater rights, greater social justice and greater peace.”
