Esquerra applauds Catalan TV broadcaster 3Cat joining the European Broadcasting Union, a historic milestone reinforcing Catalonia’s voice in Europe

3Cat’s membership of the EBU complies with one of the accords with Esquerra Republicana, and places a non-state public broadcaster alongside the big European audiovisual corporations for the first time.

Esquerra Republicana applauds the approval of 3Cat membership to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), a historic milestone long called for by Catalonia and which has finally come about after many years of failed attempts.

This accomplishment is the result of the perseverance of many people and institutions, but also of the political commitment by Esquerra Republicana, which set this condition as one of the accords for the investiture of Catalan President Salvador Illa. That commitment has at last been honoured.

For the first time, a public non-state broadcaster has joined the EBU under a specific category, shares a space with big European public corporations such as the BBC, France Télévisions, RAI, ARD/ZDF or RTVE. It is the recognition of the dimension, quality and unique nature of 3Cat and of Catalan audiovisual media.

Joining the EBU allows 3Cat to play in the major leagues. The Catalan corporation will participate in spheres where standards, strategies, and the future of European public media are defined, reinforcing its role as a benchmark in audiovisual production in Catalan, and in digital innovation.

In addition, membership opens the door to a permanent exchange of content, news, knowledge and good practices with the rest of European public radio and television. This means bringing Europe closer to Catalonia, but also, and above all, projecting the Catalan reality, language and identity in Europe with its own voice, its own vision and in Catalan.

For Esquerra Republicana, this is also another step in the construction of Catalonia’s national structures. All European states are present in the EBU through their public media, and from now on, Catalonia will also be present there with a distinc representation from Spain’s RTVE, consolidating its own space for international projection.

Esquerra Republicana will continue to work for Catalonia’s greater presence, greater recognition and greater capacity for influence in European and international organizations, defending the Catalan language, culture and its own institutions with a distinct national voice.
