Esquerra calls for a democratic response to the reactionary offensive in Latin America

Esquerra Republicana expresses its concern regarding the political shift that has been taking place recently in Latin America. The recent defeats of the transformational progressive projects in Colombia and Peru, along with those in Argentina in 2023, and Chile and Bolivia in 2025, confirm a regressive dynamic within the framework of a conservative and reactionary offensive on a global scale, with Donald Trump as one of its main touchstones.

Through the National Security Strategy 2025 and the new “Donroe” Doctrine, a contemporary adaptation of the Monroe Doctrine, the United States has once again set US foreign and security policy for the Latin American region as one of its strategic priorities, with the aim of directly intervening in the internal politics of many of those countries, ensuring that their governments are in line with the US administration, violating the sovereignty of those countries while subordinating them to the interests of the United States.

Over the last years, progressive Latin American governments have led significant advances in social rights, the fight on poverty, the defence of civil rights, environmental protection and the strengthening of democratic institutions. This progress demonstrates that left-wing policies can truly improve the living standards of social majorities, extending opportunities and building fairer and more cohesive societies. However, they have also been the subject of an intense political, judicial, media and economic offensive by conservative sectors and establishment elites that see their privileges being questioned.

The hard right and its neoliberal allies foster hate speech, they question fundamental rights, weaken democratic institutions and try to reverse social gains achieved after decades of collective struggles. Women’s and LGBT rights, environmental protection, freedom of the press, and social justice are today under increasing threat worldwide.

Faced with this reality, it is more necessary than ever to strengthen cooperation between progressive, democratic and pro-sovereignty forces. Current challenges, such as inequality, the climate emergency, authoritarian menaces, and the concentration of economic power, can only be faced through international solidarity, the defence of human rights, and a commitment to social justice and democracy.

Esquerra Republicana reiterates its solidarity with the progressive forces of Latin America and with all those entities and people who work to build freer and fairer societies. Only a progressive, democratic and internationalist response will be able to withstand those who wish to roll back rights and freedoms, and guarantee that future generations live in a better world.
