Esquerra Republicana communiqué on Western Sahara

1. We deeply regret the decision by Primer Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government to support Morocco’s plan for autonomy for Western Sahara. We consider this historic diplomatic about face to be an unacceptable unilateral break with the consensus of United Nations resolutions.

2. We consider it absolutely inadmissible that international law and the rights of the Sahrawi people should be flouted, subject to ulterior interests in order to promote the improvement of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Spain.

3. We reaffirm that the resolution on the final status of Western Sahara, a territory still to be decolonized, involves self-determination through a referendum on independence, respecting the democratic will of the Sahrawi people.

4. We therefore demand that the Spanish Government immediately rectify this decision and make a clear commitment to holding a referendum on self-determination in which the sovereignty of the Sahrawi people prevails, as called for by the various resolutions adopted by the United Nations.

5. We call on the EU to adopt and defend a firm, united position on the conflict in Western Sahara in line with the United Nations resolutions, and to work constructively to uphold international law. We likewise call on the EU to foster good neighbourly relations with Morocco and Europe’s other southern neighbours in keeping with the fundamental principles of the European Union.
