Esquerra Republicana strongly condemns Russian President Putin’s decision to send troops to the Donbass area under de facto control of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk Republics, invading Ukrainian territory in violation of international law and the Minsk Agreements.

We call on all actors to comply with international law and return to the Minsk agreements.

Esquerra Republicana defends the exercise of the right of peoples to self-determination, and we believe that Europe’s borders can be changed, but never under threat, coercion or military invasion, but on the basis of democratic process and political agreements.

We urge Russia, Ukraine, the EU and the US to take diplomatic steps to avoid an open military conflict with devastating consequences.

We support a swift, united response from the European Union, including effective, selective sanctions –i.e. avoiding indiscriminate measures against the Russian people– to help curb any military escalation of this conflict.

We reiterate our opposition to Spain’s military involvement.
