Esquerra Republicana’s group has introduced a motion for a Parliament of Catalonia resolution demanding the European Union facilitates the future accession of Scotland, Wales, and the North of Ireland if these territories decide democratically to become independent.

The initiative maintains that the European institutions should further internal enlargement mechanisms to guarantee the continuity of citizenship rights within the EU. The draft considers that Brexit represented “a victory for exclusionary English nationalism,” and emphasises that Scotland and the North of Ireland voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the European Union.

Esquerra understands the latest electoral results in the United Kingdom to buttress pro-independence and pro-European forces, especially with the victory of the Scottish National Party in Scotland, the progress of Plaid Cymru in Wales, as well as the role of Sinn Féin in the North of Ireland. It likewise alerts to the growth of the far right in England.

The motion also urges the EU to support a possible second Scottish independence referendum if the Holyrood Parliament so requests, and calls for a “Europe of peoples and nations” based on respect for democracy and the right to self-determination.
