Esquerra welcomes the news, but recalls that there are still many other cases and persons affected by the repression that has brought authentic political persecution to the courts.
Esquerra Republicana applauds the fact that one year after the passing of the Amnesty law, the Provincial Court of Barcelona has agreed to apply it to around thirty people charged with organising the 2017 referendum of 1st October.
Amnesty has been applied to a list of over thirty defendants, many of them from the case heard by Court 13, to which others from Court 18 were added. Esquerra Republicana celebrates that part of their nightmare repression is over, and recalls that, despite this good news, they will continue to fight to end the repression, since there are still several cases pending, brought both by judicial authorities and by far-right parties such as VOX that filed appeals, contributing to this chapter of judicialisation of politics that should never have occurred in democracy. One of the cases is that of Raül Romeva who, despite being on the list of those amnestied by the Barcelona Court, is still affected by the sentence passed by the Supreme Court.
The Barcelona Court of Appeal halted the application of the amnesty law in September, partially upholding a writ filed by the prosecution, and returned the entire case to the 13th Barcelona Court of Inquiry to complete the investigation into foreign expenditure, clarify who was under investigation, and then decide whether to apply the amnesty to them. The case has now finally been closed with the application of the amnesty law.
