Esquerra Republicana stakes on an independence referendum with a clear question and a binary answer

Spokesperson Marta Vilalta emphasizes that the Academic Council’s report on the Clarity Agreement legitimises the formula that Esquerra has always vindicated

“We reiterate, as we have always done at Esquerra Republicana, that the formula we believe is best and ideal to resolve the political conflict between Catalonia and the Spanish state is an independence referendum with a clear question and a binary answer, yes or no,” explained Esquerra Deputy Secretary General and spokesperson Marta Vilalta at a press conference after the report of the Academic Council on the Clarity Agreement was published this morning. This demonstrates the legitimacy and rigour of the formula that Esquerra has always defended.

Esquerra Republicana thus shares the public position of the President of the Catalan Generalitat government Pere Aragonès, who also vindicated this path and the opportunity to work on internal consensus in Catalonia. Esquerra values highly the political determination of President Aragonès in the search for ways to resolve the political conflict between Catalonia and the Spanish state, and insists, as does the President, that the referendum on independence through agreement is a viable, necessary and democratically inclusive tool. On the other hand, Ms Vilalta pointed out that “we are still waiting for proposals from those who have not yet made any.”

Finally, Esquerra’s spokeswoman also valued the rigorous contribution of the expert members of the Academic Council that drew up the report and was thankful for both the political and academic initiatives for finding ways to resolve Catalonia’s political conflict with Spanish state. “These are proposals that will mean going to the ballot, they all mean being able to vote, and that is positive because it confirms that the right to decide is the key and is at the centre of the democratic resolution of the political conflict; it is also for those who would vote no, and that is why it is so powerful,” she emphasized.

“We are pleased to go one step further and put proposals forward, to reiterate that the best option is to vote yes or no to the independence of Catalonia through agreement; that is what we have always defended at Esquerra, and we continue to do so now that we have a new academic endorsement, firmly maintaining and determined to make it possible,” she concluded.
