Esquerra Secretary General Elisenda Alamany calls for greater involvement by the EU in solving the housing crisis in Catalonia

The EU MEP mission led by Esquerra’s Diana Riba comes to Barcelona. Elisenda Alamany asks them to limit purchase of residential property by European investment funds and to make a greater commitment to rehabilitation

On the day the MEP mission has come to Catalonia to analyse the housing crisis, Esquerra Republicana’s Secretary General Elisenda Alamany has called on them to “take determined action” in order to provide solutions “so people can stay and live in their city” in an advisory gathering in Plaça de Sant Jaume, Barcelona, where she asserted Esquerra’s leadership in housing policy.

“We have regulated rental prices, we have regulated seasonal and room lets and we enacted the decree to allow closure of tourist apartments in Barcelona, but we will tell this EU mission that much more needs to be done,” said Ms Alamany, who has set tasks for the European institutions, including “limiting the purchase of homes by European investment funds that come to speculate, along with an ambitious policy of rehabilitation.”

“We need to act and stop posturing,” she insisted, “which is why we have brought Europe to Barcelona and Catalonia. We need to do much more: innovate, modernise our agenda with solutions and share them with other cities,” reiterated Ms Alamany.
