Esquerra’s National Council endorses the leadership’s decision not to participate in the negotiations for Catalonia’s 2025 Budget

Leader Oriol Junqueras warns that without tax sovereignty, a good budget proposal “is impossible” and reiterates that no new agreements will be reached without the fulfilment of the prior accords

Esquerra Republicana’s National Council on Saturday endorsed the leadership’s decision not to participate in the budget negotiations for 2025. “It is impossible for a budget proposal to be ideal if it does not include the revenues from the improved receipts by our institutions,” said leader Oriol Junqueras, who reiterated that for this reason, Esquerra will not reach new agreements with the Socialist Party until it fulfils the previous accords. “Without wishing to sound harsh or threatening, we side with our society,” he said.

“Just as Esquerra Republicana is proud to have reached agreements for the good of our society, it is also responsible for demanding fulfilment, and we want the majority of the country to side with us on this demand,” he stated. In this regard, he emphasized that the agreement for Catalonia to collect all taxes is “useful” for workers, companies, universities, schools, hospitals and other public services in the country, which “need these resources.”

“The Socialist Party knows full well what Esquerra Republicana’s position is, and must decide how it is to fulfil the agreements,” he concluded.
