She will replace Foreign Minister Bernat Solé who was disqualified by the High Court of Justice in Catalonia yesterday for his participation in the 2017 1-O independence referendum

Meritxell Serret, one of the Catalan political exiles in Brussels and currently Catalonia’s Generalitat government Delegate to the EU, will be number two on the Esquerra Republicana ticket for the Lleida constituency, replacing Foreign Minister Bernat Solé who was disqualified by the High Court of Justice in Catalonia yesterday for his participation as a mayor in the 2017 1-O independence referendum.

Esquerra Republicana condemns the interference of the Spanish justice in the election process and in his candidacy, but reiterates that the repression will not stop or block the party. To the contrary, it bolsters the commitment to fight for the Catalan Republic further still. In this regard, Esquerra has placed the former Minister of Agriculture and likewise victim of the Spanish state’s repression as number two on the Lleida ticket.

Both Ms Serret and Bernat Solé can best represent Esquerra’s republican values. Both have been members of the Catalan Generalitat Government, both are responsible for different aspects of international policy, and have been victims of Spain’s vengeance in its general cause against independence.
