Progress towards climate neutrality: the Catalan government endorses the Energy Prospective for Catalonia 2050 Report

The survey envisages a feasible strategy and the steps to take for decarbonisation of the Catalan energy system, from the necessary investment, installation of new renewable sources, and including energy savings

The country is taking further steps towards climate neutrality with today’s approval by the Esquerra government of the Energy Prospective for Catalonia 2050 Report (PROENCAT 2050). The study, drawn up by the Catalan Institute for Energy (ICAEN), “marks where we need to go to make decarbonisation possible, with effective strategies and arguments,” explained the Minister for Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda David Mascort at a press conference.

The minister recalled that “the Catalan parliament passed the Climate Change bill in 2017, which marked the way forward.” Regarding the importance of PROENCAT 2050, Mr Mascort emphasized that “in our country, 72% of emissions are linked to the energy cycle,” which is why it is essential, he argued.

The goal of climate neutrality is part of the objectives established by the European Union and is an essential step in the fight against climate change. This involves reducing CO2 emissions to the levels of carbon absorption by the planet’s natural carbon sinks, thus attaining a zero balance.

The Government is already working on applying PROENCAT 2050 guidelines for the design and execution of the country’s energy policies, which will bring us closer to energy sovereignty, and so also reducing external energy dependence, from the current 93.8% to 7.9% in 2050. This would involve going from energy expenditure of €8.7 billion a year down to €650 million.

PROENCAT 2050 establishes twenty strategies to achieve decarbonisation of the Catalan energy system and so make clear progress in the energy transition. From the reduction of energy consumption without reducing the citizens’ welfare, through to decarbonisation of the primary sector and industry, with progress towards near zero-consumption building, and the fight against energy poverty in defence of the most vulnerable consumers so as not to leave anyone behind.

The Catalan government thus reiterates its commitment to a green, just and inclusive transition, with the purpose of persisting in serving our citizens and country.
