Statement by Esquerra Republicana on the situation in Venezuela

The aggression by the United States against Venezuela constitutes a flagrant breach of the Charter of the United Nations, of international law and of the multilateral system.

The aggression by the United States against Venezuela constitutes a flagrant breach of the Charter of the United Nations, of international law and of the multilateral system. No self-proclaimed democratic country can bomb or intervene in other nations pursuant to its convenience and interests, placing civilian lives at risk and further aggravating the situation.

Esquerra Republicana denounces the aggression, the illegal abduction of Nicolás Maduro, as well as the escalating belligerence stimulated by the Trump administration, which represents a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.

We reject all unilateral military action and demand full respect for international law, in particular the principles of sovereignty, self-determination, territorial integrity of States, prohibition of the use of force, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
We call for an immediate de-escalation to prevent further tensions, and to keep all diplomatic channels open. Dialogue between the parties is essential to prevent any further escalation and to ensure a political solution to the conflict, while it is necessary to ensure that only the Venezuelan people are to decide on the future of Venezuela.

We also call for the involvement of the European Union, which has the opportunity and responsibility to lead the course of diplomacy and take an active role as a defender of a rules-based international order. This includes the advancement of respect for the sovereignty of peoples, diplomacy, and peace. We express our solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reaffirm that dialogue and diplomacy are the only possible path.
