The Catalan Government and Esquerra follow through with the agreement on extension of the foreign delegation network

Catalonia’s Generalitat government will open three new institutional offices abroad in China, Canada and in the Eastern Mediterranean

The Catalan Generalitat Government and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya’s parliamentary group have agreed to extend the network of delegations abroad from the current 21 to 24. The Catalan Minister for European Union and Foreign Action Jaume Duch and Esquerra Republicana deputy spokesperson Jordi Albert convened in the Parliament of Catalonia on Monday afternoon to advance the fulfilment of the investiture agreement between ERC and PSC, the Catalan branch of the Spanish Socialist Party. The agreement encompassed the consolidation and expansion of the network of foreign delegations.

The three new delegations will be located in China, Canada –with a person specifically responsible for relations with Quebec– and the Eastern Mediterranean, based in Jordan.

In this way, this point in the investiture agreement between ERC and the PSC will be fulfilled, prioritising areas of the world with a high strategic interest for Catalonia. The Government and ERC have agreed to continue working on improving management of the delegations abroad, another point included in the agreement.

A new form of management

The extension of the network of the foreign delegations is part of the Plan for the Consolidation of Government Delegations Abroad approved at the end of July, which establishes the bases for a new management model to enhance their operations.

It also includes the objective of strengthening the Catalan institutional presence in priority countries in the current international context. In this regard, the expansion agreed upon on Monday means the reinforcement of the role of the network of Government delegations abroad, bolstering the representation and economic projection of Catalonia in the world.
