Esquerra censures the Spanish government’s inaction on migrants’ deaths on its borders

Esquerra Republicana has submitted the humanitarian emergency in the Sea of Alboran in the Western Mediterranean, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Canary Islands for debate in the Catalan Parliament. The party has condemned the deaths of migrants, especially given the sharp increase in recent weeks, and wants the Catalan chamber to consider that this is not a tragedy but “the concrete and inevitable result of the murderous policies of the European Union’s member states, and in particular those of the Spanish government.”

That is why the draft—presented by MP Ruben Wagensberg after the parliamentary debate with Catalan Foreign Minister Bernat Solé—calls on the Parliament to condemn the Spanish government’s inaction on the humanitarian crisis.

In this regard, Esquerra urges the Catalan Generalitat government to offer again to establish a humanitarian corridor for forcibly displaced persons, with an inclusive reception process. Esquerra also wants the Parliament to demand that Spain respects human rights in its management of migrants, given that so far they have repeatedly infringed them, as denounced by Human Rights Watch.
